Old Ocher Red Feather Paint Decorated Cupboard 19th C. You are bidding on and old folk art feather painted cupboard having four turned (turnip) feet. The feet are black and the body of the cupboard is painted with an ocher base coat and a reddish brown paint making the pattern. Large feathers were sometimes used to get the pattern you see. This type of painted decoration on anything is getting harder and harder to find. The back is made with five boards that are fitted together and held in place with a hand hammered nails. T are some dry white spots the size of the nail heads on top of some of the nail heads. I take these very small white dry spots to be gesso that was applied before the painted decoration was put on. See close up photo. The cornice pieces are made from one piece of wood and not layered on like some. The top is a single board. T are shelves inside and on one of the shelves t is a hook that fastens the door shut. The left door has the slightest warp to it. T is a hook and fastener on this side of the cupboard that holds the door shut. A key hole and lock are on the other door. I do not have the key and do not know if the lock will work. T are three battens on each door on the inside. This paint decoration is early but probably not the original coat of paint but a later decoration. It has been on the cupboard for a very long time and shows wear in all the correct places. I say it may not be the original coat of paint because behind the hinges that are on one side the cupboard now are traces of what appear to be very old and early butterfly hinges that were on the cupboard at one time and are now replaced. One of the doors has been turned around also because the butterfly hinge mark is now on the opposite side of w the hinges are now. I can send more photos of this to try and explain it better if you like. This cupboard stands 57 3/4" tall. It is 30 5/8" wide and 13 3/4" deep. When both doors are open the opening measures 23" wide. The shelves vary in size. The shelves would hold an object approx. 10" tall on the top shelf, 12 3/4" tall on second shelf, 12 3/4" tall third shelf and 13 3/4" tall on the bottom shelf. An old painted basket or blue decorated stoneware crock would look good sitting atop this cupboard. An old early quilt collection, or old yellowware or old decoy collection would look great displayed in this piece. This cupboard is not very heavy. The wood shelves and doors are about 1/2" thick. The wood has some knots and may be pine but I'm not sure. We would like for the winning bidder to pick this cupboard up.
