I am offering an old Papago (Tohono O'Odham) basket made of yucca and devil's claw over bear grass. It measures 12 1/2 inches in diameter and is 3 7/8 inches high. It has a domed / concave center intended to facilitate head carrying (like an Acoma Olla) and a hanging loop on the outermost coil. These are functional features typical to baskets made for use in contrast to the decorative baskets made for the tourist trade. The basket has a beautiful mottled medium blonde patina. The decorative devil's claw stitching has not faded. Structural overstitching, intended to reinforce the concave center, highlights the delicate central spiral. The coils vary in thickness, with those in the middle counting 6 coils per inch, the bottom 4 coils per inch and the flaring sides 3 coils per inch. The stitches count 11 per inch, with some areas on the basket counting up to 15 stitches per inch. The coils and stitches are tight. T is only one broken stitch on the outermost coil to the right of the hanging loop. T is a red discoloration on the exterior of the basket that might come from saguaro fruit (I have tested it with a damp Q-tip. It is water soluble. It is not paint). The interior has traces of pollen trapped between the coils and tiny traces of dirt. The basket was probably used briefly before it was sold. It is in very good condition overall read more
