Offered is this large and unusual two-handled china console bowl featuring the scene of the muse Clio as a cherub in the presence of a lovely woman with a musical instrument in her hand. In Greek mythology, Clio is the muse of Heroic poetry and history and often is represented with a parchment scroll, as she is in this instance. The bowl stands 10.75 inches high (27.3 cm) and measures 15.5 inches long (29.3 cm). The two curled handles on either end are glazed pink with gold trim. They take the form of metal garniture frames, though they are part of the elaborate porcelain mold. The bowl rests atop a pedestal above an oval base. The matte finish on the pedestal is a deep blue green. Gold trimmed geometric blocks and acanthus leaves provide the four "feet" upon which the pedestal rests. The bowl itself has a sculpted scalloped rim. It is glazed a deep charcoal gray or black. Gold trim accents the bowl on the front, back, sides and rim. We believe this bowl to be Old Paris Porcelain, which dates to the mid 1800s in France . The piece is in very good condition for its years. No chips or cracks. T is some unevenness to the black finish, which seems semi-glossy with some areas being matte (see photos). Gold trim shows some wear, especially around the handles.
