This tintype measures 6-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches. The image is a lovely lady with a delicately hand-painted white collar, gold clasp, and gold chain. I did not know whether this is a daguerreotype or tin-type but read that a magnet would be attracted to the tin-type and not the copper in daguerreotypes. A magnet is attracted to the back of this photograph which is on a very thin metal. I read about daguerreotypes and Johann Baptist Isenring (1769-1860) who was a copperplate engraver from Switzerland. He over-painted daguerrotype portraits and was noted for scratching in the pupils in the eyes. This tintype has scratched in pupils and a delicate soft coloring to the skin with additional details in hair and eyes emphasized by hand work. T is a minor hairline scratch on her left cheek, as you can see in the photos. The overall portrait is in wonderful condition and has been protected from light, heat and humidity for many years. Note: The close up photograph I have attached looks like a yellowish area across the top, but it is only the shadow from a table lamp.|
