ABOUT OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE: "Old Sheffield Plate," refers to a process discovered around 1790, in which a sheet of copper is fused to a thinner sheet of sterling silver. " Genuine Old Sheffield plated silver was only made circa 1790-1860. It is treasured for its Georgian silver style, rich patina and hand-wrought uniqueness.
The fused-plate manufacturers nearly always used copper as the base metal, and pieces of fused plate often show characteristic patches of red-brown w the silver has worn away, revealing the copper beneath. Silver mounts are often lead-filled and were applied over the edge seams w copper would have been exposed. Most is unmarked, although some early 19th-century pieces had marks very similar to those found on silver. A piece with 'Sheffield Plate' stamped on it is electroplate made in Sheffield in the later 19th century or 20th century and not genuine Old Sheffield Plate.
