From My Grandfather's collection: This auction is for MY BEST ORNATE FIGURE NAVAJO SPOON. The handle of the spoon is finely hand tooled in the shape of an owl & with owl figure details. The bowl, I find extremely interesting. The figure appears to be a Ceremonial Katsina/Kachina figure. A feather headdress is on the head & down the back. The figure is holding a staff of sometype. Possible a Ceremonial Chief or Eagle Katsina. Measurements are almost 5 1/8" for the length. Notice the design work in the photos. I speculate the age is circa 1930, as my Grandfather was an antique collector, as well as a Gov. Doctor for Native Americans 1930-35. It is definitely sterling silver, but old with no maker's mark. Low reserve. Please ask questions if needed. I am always willing to combine shipping. History: Navajo silverwork came of age at the moment when railroad travel to the Southwest brought artisans and traders into the American marketplace. The Victorian love of cutlery, and the nation's obsession with commemorative silver merged in the intriguing artistry of Navajo spoons. From the 1880's to World War II, Navajo smiths brought the highest level of skill and invention to functional teaspoons, servers, and sugar shells. At the same time, the spoons were the canvas for ethnic art. An utterly unique artform, these artifacts are now ardently sought by collectors and institutions, as rare mementos of Navajo artistry and the souvenir trade."-- Excerpt from Navajo Spoons: Indian Artistry and the Souvenir Trade by Cindra Kline.
