From My Grandfather's collection: This auction is for 4 Navajo Handmade design spoons with Eagles & arrows on handles. 2 have Eagles & arrows, and 2 have multiple arrows. These spoons are heavy silver & a large size tableware spoon set. They match in design & size with the other 4 I have listed-slightly different but same size. Great "all purpose spoons", & bowl larger than tea spoons or coffee spoons. The original set of 8 is available in seperate auctions of 4 each, as many may not want that many. The other set of 4 listed are the same size & part of the original set, but they match in design. Not one is exactly alike, as they are handmade, but definitely a matching set- same size & obviously same maker. Measurements are ABT. 7 1/4 in length. Notice the design work in the photos. I speculate the age is circa 1930, as my Grandfather was an antique collector, as well as a Gov. Doctor for Native Americans 1930-35. These are definitely sterling silver, but old with no maker's mark. I will have more Native American Navajo spoons I will be selling along with a couple of forks. Check my listings for 12 Navajo Teaspoons , in sets of 4 each listing. I have also just listed a Rare Carmelita Dunlap San Ildefonso pot from our family collection. Low reserve. Please ask questions if needed. This auction is for 4 spoons, so someone can actually use a set. Another set of 4 is available if someone wants a set of 8. I am always willing to combine shipping. History: Navajo silverwork came of age at the moment when railroad travel to the Southwest brought artisans and traders into the American marketplace. The Victorian love of cutlery, and the nation's obsession with commemorative silver merged in the intriguing artistry of Navajo spoons. From the 1880's to World War II, Navajo smiths brought the highest level of skill and invention to functional teaspoons, servers, and sugar shells. At the same time, the spoons were the canvas for ethnic art. An utterly unique artform, these artifacts are now ardently sought by collectors and institutions, as rare mementos of Navajo artistry and the souvenir trade."-- Excerpt from Navajo Spoons: Indian Artistry and the Souvenir Trade by Cindra Kline.
