Up for auction is this very rare, and very old pocket size brass balance scale. This scale was made to be completely portable and self contained. T is a small brass figure 8 shaped hook that allows the scale to be hung anyw it is needed. I really have no idea of the age, but the scale could possibly have been a field scale from the Gold Rush days. The scale and the pans are all brass, and it comes in a dark green oval tin container. I hope you can see the decoration on the top of the hinged lid. The decoration has faded some over the years, but is still very visible. Features an old sroll and floral type border, and the old Federal Eagle logo (w/ the shield on its chest), just like the old coins from the late 1800's. T is some slight loss of paint around the very top and bottom edges from years of use and handling. As you can hopefully see in the pic on the right portion of the case t is a very small piece of paint missing, showing the bare metal underneath. The case measures 5.25 inches by JUST under 2.5 inches. The brass scale arms are 4.75 inches across, and 2 inches high when hung. Total lenghth of the scale, from the top of the balance mechanism to the bottom of the pans (when hung for use) is 6.25 inches. The brass pans are each 2 inches in diameter.
