OLD SOUTH CAROLINA STONEWARE PITCHER ALKALINE GLAZE Fresh from the estate of a pottery collector in New England who recognized YEARS ago the subtle beauty of the alkaline glazes typical of southern stoneware, this pitcher is, I think, particularly graceful in form, with its well-rounded body and pinched spout. The collector wasn't savvy enough in the area of southern pottery to be able to pinpoint a county, but he did have it labeled S. Carolina. The way its strap handle is attached, with a thumbprint and a sort of flange on one side may help to identify its maker. It is just under 10 inches tall and about 6 ½ inches in diameter, and is in very nice condition, with no cracks and only a few small, shallow chips around the rim. Its color is rich and enhanced by some lighter colored drip. The bottom has been thickly painted, perhaps to make the surface a bit smoother and less apt to scratch the table. I'm confident the paint doesn't cover any unpleasant surprises!Please see photos. Photos are not actual size.
