Background: About five years ago I saw this statue up forauction on eBay. Someone had painted the Blessed Mother so terribly that shelooked like a clown. I felt I should rescue it. I was the only bidder. When the statue arrived I heard that awful sound--the sound of something broken. Obviously, the person who sent it did not know how to pack fragile things and when I opened the package, I saw that the statue had broken near the feet and base. What was interesting is that inside the hollow statue was newspaper that had evidently been placed during the first firing. Even though the newspaper was yellowed and falling apart, I did find a masthead with a location and date. It was a newspaper from Seneca Falls, NY with the date of Friday, February 16, 1917. Instead of throwing the statue away, I set about to repair it. I used a repair medium that dries to the consistency of ceramic that filled in the gaps in the spots w I glued the parts together. It is quite solid now. I used the book, Saint Bernadette Soubirous by Abbe Francois Trochu as my guide and repainted this statue of Our Lady of Lourdes as Bernadette described her: Dressed all in white with a blue girdle around her waist, holding a white pearl rosary with a gold chain and crucifix, and a gold rose at each foot.
