This is an early USMC Good Conduct medal in the Type V format, which was used in only 1913-1914 and is characterized by four line block engraving with the medal number, name, enlistement and date span in years. These medals, unlike any others, had the capital letters in the name extending below the line of engraving. This medal is officially hand engraved to the recipient, "No.3644 MELVEN D. HOCKENSMITH 1st ENLISTMENT 1909-1913." Hockensmith enlisted on 24 Maarch 1909. In Septmeber of 1911, he was serving with Company B, 2nd Marine Regiment. In May of 1912, he was aboard the USS Buffalo bound for Olongapo, Philippine Islands. Generally VF condition with replaced top assembly. A scarce type with some recipient information. NOTE: I am very good about getting my orders out promptly, sometimes same day and almost always within 24 hours. However, lately the U.S. postal "service" has been very spotty. In the last several months, I have had first class insured items take over a month to California and two weeks in New York State. Most are delivered in a timely fashion, but a few are not.
