Old Vintage Antique Turkoman Chuval Rug
54" x 36" Wow! This large be autiful Turkoman Chuval has full pile, and is one of three I have listed this week. It came out of an estate in Missouri, and appears old enough to have seen actual use by nomadic Turkmen tribesmen. Chuval, Torba, and Mafrash were produced by every Turkmen weaving group, and describe the different sizes (large to small) of trappings we would now refer to as storage bags... used to store and transport domestic goods and material possessions. Chuval were the largest (and it is said the oldest and most important) of these bags. I'm not sure exactly how old this is, but it's definitely got age and patina (and the old lead seal*), and the design, colors, and materials suggest this is Yomut . *TheTurkish Ministry of Commerce issued an order, effective June 1, 1926,that all rugs manufactured in Turkey and intended for export must have a small lead seal attached, or be prohibited from export. This was done to discourage imitations and also to prevent fraudulent transactions in the rug trade. I would consider this piece to be in very good condition. (t is a very small amount of repilable moth damage to the edge of the pile face, and a small repairable hole in the backing, as shown) Don't miss this one.
