Offered is a antique violin . Unlabeled . May be Italian, French, or possibly German origin. This violin is set up and playable as/is. The violin's strings are used but OK (I will let the buyer choose a string set to his or her liking). The pegs shown hold pitch, although they are bit worn and mismatched. The construction and dimensions indicate this violin is a fine instrument, very old, most likely early to mid 19th century. The violin is lined and blocked. The blocks are curved to the contour of the ribs. One piece back of faint curl. Note: the back is pinned with wood pins: 1 on top, and 2 on bottom. The ribs have a bit more figure. The neck and scroll are somewhat plain. The top is pine or spruce of medium grain, widening slightly toward the flanks.
The ff holes are expertly carved. This violin possesses exquisite purfling with 'bee' stings. The neck appears to be original, although may have been reset at one time. The length of the neck, from the top of the scroll to the end of the heel (extending into the body area), is 9-1/2" (241mm). The scroll is not grafted. The violin's dimensions are (all approx.): Overall Length (excluding end pin): 23-1/4" (590mm) LOB (excluding button and end pin): 14" (356mm) UB : 6-1/4" (159mm) CB : 4-1/8" (105mm) LB : 7-7/8" (200mm) Rib Height : 1-7/32" (31mm) upper and lower Arching : very flat with ~ 3/16" (4.8mm) rise from top edge to center of the top. T are 4 expertly repaired top cracks (all on treble side: 3 below ff hole, 1 above; all are tight and not obtrusive). No bass bar, or sound post cracks. No back, or rib cracks that I can see. The varnish is ~90% original with some wear, and touch ups. The scroll is beautifully carved, and in excellent condition, i.e., no cracks. No open seams. T are a few minor scuffs and scratches elsew Approx. 3/8" of purfling is missing on the top ~1.5" from the treble side of the saddle. T is case rub wear to the edge of lower bass side of the top. T is case rub wear to the back of the scroll, mostly top center spine. T is minor bow rub wear to the edge of the treble side center bout. The neck heel has some old shipping damage (I don't know how this may have occurred...the neck joint is tight and solid nonetheless). The violin will be shipped in a good old wood case with brass latches and top handle (no key for center lock) of mid 19th century vintage. No bow . The build quality, construction dimensions/pattern, and choice of woods certainly point to this as a fine, master built instrument. I do not have provenance, or a certificate for this violin. Tfore, I offer it at what I believe is much less than its actual market value. I believe this is an investment quality violin. I am very confident that this is an early to mid 19th century violin, and likely Italian. I offer a 7 day money back refund policy (excluding insured shipping both ways). Free insured shipping to USA, lower 48 (Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico buyers, please wait for an invoice...the cost will be actual, plus insurance). $85.00 insured shipping world wide ( Note: all customs, duties and taxes are the responsibility of the buyer ). Payment by PayPal, only. Thanks for looking!
