W & LE GURLEY SURVEYING TRANSIT AND WYE LEVEL INCLUDES TRIPODS FOR EACH This auction is for a nice pair of approximately 100 year old survey instruments. Each has it's original tripod and mahogany dove-tail (not finger joint) box. The tripod for the level has had a crack in one of the legs repaired and it looks and operates fine. Each tripod has the six operating clamps and the tripod for the transit has the original tripod cap. I would rate the tripods in above average condition considering their age.... they are not perfect. The Gurley transit is a quite small instrument. Threre is a small stamping on it that says Leder & Probst, Boston, Mass. Most likely this is w the transit was sold when new. The transit is in fine shape. The view through the telescope is nice and sharp. The crosshairs and stadia wires are present. The three level bubbles are full and functional. The vertical motion and upper/lower horizontal movements turn freely and I do not think this little gun has ever been dropped or abused. The compass needle raises and lowers and goes nicely to north. The declination adjustment works smoothly as it should. The circle readings are in good shape... not perfect. The overall finish on this transit is mellowed into a nice nutty brown patina.
