OLD Wrought Iron Hole & Rod Trammel Early 18th Century This is an early style FIREPLACE TRAMMEL. These would date in the early to mid 1800's, possibly older. They were hung in the fireplace hearth and used for raising and lowering your cast iron or brass pot closer to the fire or away from the fire. They also may have been used for outside cooking when making apple sauce.Look at all the pictures for the detailing and the neat grain of the wrought iron. This TRAMMEL has a nice even color and texture from top to bottom. The top and bottom hook have a nice classic shape which adds to the vintage charm. To raise the pot up from the heat you simply choose a hole farther up and moved the pin to that hole. It was hand made from wrought iron and lightly and evenly rusted and pitted from many years in the hearth. The trammel has a nice early colonial look to it.I cleaned off all the loose rust sealed it with an oil based sealer. This protects and keeps the rust from returning. The whole trammel is 52" long fully extended and 34" at its shortest and 1 1/2" wide. The "sheppard hook" top hook is 3 1/2" long and 4" across the hook. The main bar with the holes is 5/16" thick. The bottom 2 1/4" hook is curled tight in a neat curl with a nice classic hook that held the pot handle securely. 7/07 Sign up for my email newsletters by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites.
