Gunto conversion to katana for cutting. Depending on the angle of the light sometimes a wood grain pattern may be seen. This could be Gendaito but for simplicity sake I will simply call it gunto. A distinctive clay covered, water quenched, notareba hamon is seen. I purchased this blade several years ago in Seki City and the mei on the ha-agari kurijiri style nakago seems to bear this out. Steel is Manchurian rail. Yasurime appears to be kesho'. I was told it was pre-1939 blade but as I cannot translate the date I cannot confirm. The blade is in the original polish as purchased, probably as issued, only oiled 2 times per year since. Polish is very very good as is. No apparent bends or rust. Habaki is heavy cast with traditional nekogaki. I have used this blade only a few times for cutting. Edge remains hair shaving sharp! T are 2 small nicks which would probably polish out okay. Tsuka is a full wrap, not panel, in a slight rikko style, with edo period, shakudo, fuchi/kashira in a crane pattern. Tsuba is also a steel crane style with lots of hand finishing. Nice old style ring when thumped. Brown/black patina. Not one of the el cheapo models. Double mekugi with menuki being a gold dragon. Mekugiana appear to be punched not drilled. Same' is very large node, exceptional shape. Ito is gold silk, extremely tight and in very fine shape. read more
