Merycoidodon skull Orella Member-Brule Formation Oligocene Sioux County, Nebraska OREODONT SKULL BRULE FORMATION, Merycoidodon culbertsoni. The stockily-built Oreodonts are some of the most abundant fossils in Oligocene rocks of the High Plains. Oreodonts were very common in the western United States 35 to 20 million years ago (late Eocene through early Miocene). Around the Big Badlands of South Dakota and adjacent Nebraska, extensive " oreodon " beds are replete with these mammals. Consisting of an overall diversity of about 50 species, Oreodonts were mostly small dog- to large pig-sized herbivores, feeding predominantly on leafy vegetation. The Oreodont species are part of a diverse group of artiodactyls, or even-toed hoofed mammals - like sheep and pigs. The Oreodont is sometimes called the "sheep of the Oligocene" since their teeth suggest that they were ruminants (cud-chewers) as well. Oreodonts are an ancient relative of the pig as well as the camel (ungulates), and Oreodont fossils, of differing varieties are conserved and exhibited in many U. S. natural history museums since they are a symbol of what the mammals of North America had evolved to at that time.
