Jose Mari Morelos y Pavon is considered to be a national hero of Mexico. In his honor, the state of Morelos and city of Morelia are named after him. Morelos was a Roman Catholic priest and a famous warrior and revolutionary commander of Mexican Forces in the revolution against Spain. He was captured by the Spanish authorities and executed for treason in 1815 at the age of 50. Minted from 1957 to 1967, this was the last silver peso to be produced by the Republic of Mexico.
