1872 GERMANY SAXONY SILVER 2 TALER JOHANN AND AMELIE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARYChoice Extremely Fine with an attractive design. Struck for the golden wedding anniversary of Johann and Amelie This double thaler was struck in the kingdom of Saxony in 1872, after the issue of double thalers was supposed to cease. As a silver-producing state, Saxony produced a lot of talers including double or Doppler as referred to in German. A rare variety exists with a plain edge. During the 1848–49 constitutionalist revolutions in Germany, Saxony became a hotbed for revolutionaries, with anarchists such as Mikhail Bakunin and democrats including Richard Wagner and Gottfried Semper taking part in the May Uprising in Dresden in 1849. After the Austro-Prussian War Saxony joined the North German Confederation in 1867. In 1871 it became part of the German Empire. Saxony issued some of the last Double Thaler coins prior to unification in early 1872.
