Presented at Auction is this great old VIETNAM PERIOD US MILITARY JET PILOT'S SURVIVAL KNIFE. These knives were issued by the U.S. Military to pilots, helicopter crews, and other service personnel as an all purpose survival knife. They were remarkably well made and tough as nails and were designed for hard use. This example survives in excellent condition. The knife is 9 ½" overall with a 5 1/8" blade. The blade is FORGED, (not made by stock removal) and is saber ground with a wide fuller on both sides. The blade also has a 2" SHARPENED clip and serrated saw type teeth on the spine and is a full 5/16" thick. The blade has been sharpened and shows sharpening scratches and some wear to the bluing on the surface, but is in excellent condition and retains 90% of the original grind lines. The rectangular guard is steel and has some minor movement. The guard also has two holes at the top for attaching a lanyard or for attaching the knife to a pole to make a spear. The handle is made of compressed leather washers with a steel washer front and back for added durability. The hexagonal steel pommel is heavily peened to the knife tang and is strong enough to use as a hammer, The pommel is marked " ONTARIO NY 1-1969" and has the original white reflective paint on the top.
