LARGE OPALESCENT VASELINE CANARY BANANA BOWL
RARE OLD GREENTOWN GLASS CACTUS PATTERN This is one of the most unusual pieces of opalescent vaseline glass I have seen, even though it may not be the oldest. Some glass books classify the shape as that of a Whimsey Banana Bowl. The ENCYCLOPEDIA OF OPALESCENT GLASS, 5th Ed, Edwards & Carwile, includes pieces such as this in their Whimsey Pieces. According to the book, "Glass makers were very skilled artisans and liked nothing better than to show off their skills. When bored or tired of the same shapes, they would produce one of these odd fancies that was not a part of their regular production. Many Whimsies were one of a kind pieces. Some went on to limited production. The Cactus Pattern is featured with a photograph on page 208of this book. According to the text, Cactus was originally a Greentown pattern. (Indiana Tumbler & Goblet Company, Greentown, Indiana) The pattern was made again by Fenton in the 1950's in vaseline, milk, opalescent and blue glass. The 2005 price guide for a post 1930 Fenton Cactus Pattern Vaseline small vase is $70.00. I do not know if this bowl is the older Greentown Glass or that made later by Fenton. Personally, I believe it is Fenton, though I have never seen any Fenton like it. The NGGA (National Greenglass Association) has the pattern on it's website, but not this style bowl. This bowl is a beautiful canary yellow color with an opalescent rim. In the pictures one can see the orange undertones of the glass. This color is also called Topaz. Bowl is 9 inches long 3 3/4 inches tall 6 1/4 inches wide Glows under black light, showing presence of uranium salts. Perfect condition. Not even a "flea bite".
