Up for auction is a FANTASTIC one of a kind Art Nouveau opalescent and brass hanging lamp. Originaly a gas lamp, it has been professionally converted to 110 v electric. Comes complete with wiring and all parts to hang the lamp from a ceiling fixture. The hand blown opalescent Vaseline shade is in a never before seen (by me, and I've seen A LOT OF OPALESCENT VASELINE!) spiral form and its REALLY large. The brass lamp body is in perfect condition, completely original, and complete. New wiring and hanging hook make for an easy install. The lamp dates from ca. 1900, right about the time of the beginning of the Art Nouveau period, and the end of the age of gas lighting. North Europe is w I bought it, but I would guess its manufacture as England. The glass is absolutely perfect and measures roughly as a 6" deep bowl with a 9 ½" width at the top rim. It's a big salad bowl shaped piece of glass. The opalescent spiraling is perfectly symmetrical, and each band measures about ¾" in width. The brass is all original save for 2 small nuts and one small bolt that holds it together. The brass is, all things considered, in very, very good, near perfect condition. This lamp hangs 31" down tip to top, and is 17" wide at its widest. This hand blown piece of Art Nouveau art glass is simply amazing. The color it throws in a dark room with a clear glass light bulb is spectacular. In UV light, it glows wildly, owing to the high uranium content of this TRUE opalescent vaseline glass. I absolutely completely and fully guarantee this to be REAL opalescent vaseline at least 100 years old, and to fluoresce strongly in UV light. I have personally tested it. The glass is amazing. Its big, its heavy, its perfect and it's a piece of artistry from a hand blown era never to be replicated. It's the real thing, so don't let this one get by! I've added a couple of phones in a picture to show size. The lamp glass has a brass ring permanently (well not permanent in the absolute sense) attached from manufacture, and I have not attemped to remove it for shipping as it was not necessary to do so. It is a ring around the top rim of the glass onto which the semi-circular arms of brass attach. The central rod then attaches to these arms. The final is unscrewed and packed securely, to be attached on installation. All the parts are included and quite simple to assemble. If you have any questions, you can ring me on the phone during installationa and I will be happy to assist. If you collect Art Nouveau, if you have a period home, if you collect opalescent Vaseline, if you just like antique lighting, dont pass this one up! Its that good. Although I almost always conduct true, absolute auctions, I have placed a $699 reserve on this piece. It was EXPENSIVE to buy, expensive to ship from Europe, and the dollar is in the dirt. I cannot let it out of my hands for less than $699, or I'll just have to keep it and sell it at a show. I hope you collectors can appreciate that to bring you these fine pieces, it costs money and I need a living wage to keep this going. Thanks for looking and best of luck to you all, DZ
