(Charles Louis) Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896). Leading French opera composer, best known for his operas Mignon (1866) and his Shakespearian adaptation Hamlet (1868). A stunning three-page 8x14-inch contract with Covent Garden manager Frederick Gye (1810-1878) in untranslated French, all in Thomas' hand, agreeing upon a string of performances of Hamlet between 1871 and 1874. The contract makes mention of Swedish soprano Christine Nilsson (1843-1921), who played Ophelia, and Sir Charles Santley (1834-1922), the great English baritone, who was cast in the title role. An amazing historical piece! I n good condition, with some light surface creasing and toning throughout, and very minute separations in spots along the spine and the edges of the three horizontal mailing folds.
