Species : Astraspis and Eriptychius (ordovician fish!) Age : Ordovician Formation : Harding Sandstone Location : Canon City, ColoradoThis is an excellent piece of sandstone from the famous Harding Sandstone locality. The rock is full of headshield pieces from both Astrapis and Eriptychius. Astraspis is characterized by rounded tuberacles while Eriptychius has longitudinal ridges (note sample images to show textures). Only one semi-articulated specimen has ever been found (note reconstruction). These fish are very primitive and are among the earliest articulated (and undisputed) fish in the fossil record. Note the reconstruction of Astraspis .
