This is a fantastic find and came from a person who was a worker in the old time Hollywood movie industry. This beautiful solid 14k gold (recently tested by a jeweler) and so marked on the pipe, but worn or poorly stamped to be not clear and that is why we verified this by testing. As we were told when we bought this pipe, that it was a gift from famous actor and director Douglas Fairbanks(senior, not jr.) and is so engraved on the pipe. The story we were given at the time of purchase was that this was a item used by Fairbanks in his swashbuckling movie career and later given as a gift to the man who we got the item from. It is also interesting to note that Douglas Fairbanks Jr, was a very successful US Naval officer and the Bosum pipe may have been a gift from him to his father at some time. Fairbanks junior spent much of his USN career attached to the British navy and this pipe appears to be of English manufacture. This is a RARE double pipe bosun style whistle and it is of the highest quality and is beautifully made and has a interesting maker mark and serial number or pattern number stamped on the whistle. The marking appears to be a anchor with a horse or lion in the middle of the anchor. The pipe weighs 18.4 grams of fine 14 gold, which by today's market has a scrap value of approx 500.00. This pipe/whistle is a quite rare nautical collectable even without the Hollywood connection, BUT if one could research Fairbanks career more carefully and find him using a bosun pipe of this type would certainly give this item a whole new evaluation. We are offer it for a starting bid just a bit over what it is worth as scrap gold and this is a wonderful opportunity for one to acquire a real Hollywood home run given a little more research to document the use by one of Hollywood's "royalty".
