Original HARPER'S WEEKLY Journal (New York), dated September 18, 1869. COMPLETE in 16 pgs, Folio (15 3/4" x 11 1/2"). Featured in this issue is an original 5 3/4" x 9 1/4" wood engraving "VIEW OF MAUCH CHUCK, CARBON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA" (now Jim Thorpe, PA).The accompanying article "MAUCH CHUCK, PENNSYLVANIA" reads, "Mauch Chuck, the capital of Carbon County, is situated on the west bank of the Lehigh River, w that stream passes through the Mahoning Mountain. The town lies on both sides of Mauch Chunk Creek, and between the Mahoning and Sharp mountains. It is a location so contracted in breadth that it is really a long canon. No room is afforded for gardens. The hills on either side rise precipitously to the height of several hundred feet; some of them are a thousand feet above the river. The name of the town is Indian, and signifies Bear Mountain...The town is at present in a flourishing condition, the coal shipped from this point amounting to some millions of tons per annum. The Lehigh Valley Railroad, which is one of the best-managed roads in the country affords the traveler admirable facilities for reaching this region, which is so remarkable for its picturesqueness that it has been termed the 'Switzerland of America'...".
