UNIQUE original drawing from elderly widow's estate (her late husband was the nephew of the woman who copied the Paris designs). As printed in Chicago Daily Herald in 1993, front page headline blurb "Fashion Forgery - In the 1930s and '40s, a woman copied Paris fashion designs and smuggled them stateside. Her nephew inherited the designs and a great family story...". Headline "COPYCAT ... Back in the 1930s and '40s Caroline Davis made her fortune by stealing Paris fashion designs and duplicating them back home... she made a nice living swiping Paris fashion designs so they could be made into affordable knockoffs... The sketches were hidden in magazines and smuggled out, right under the watchful eyes of the gendarmes... She hired 10 to 15 budding young artists who would accompany her to each showing of the latest from top designers. As each new outfit made its first appearance on the lithe body of a Parisian model strutting down the runway, one of the artists would run to the bathroom and quickly sketch it from memory... ORIGINAL vintage 1940s Fashion Sketch Designer Dress Drawing # 7848 Artist Signed # H ending 1/24/42 and then initials that may be C.G. cut off bottom, all as pictured. "Ensemble of red & white checked linen & white linen combination - red patent leather belt - checked linen appliqued on bodice" . Measures 8-1/2 by 11 inches and will be sent 'bagged & boarded' in acid free magazine sleeve with thick board backing. Overall excellent condition with minimal corner or border edge wear & tear, creases or ripples in paper (3 binder holes have gummed reinforcements, as seen). I believe the sketch/design is a water colored pencil/ink drawing (I'm no art expert). Nice colors and overall great shape, especially for its age. Back is clean (no writing).
