Nice pair of original identified Civil War saddlebags for the 1859 patttern McClellan cavalry saddle. An inspectorâe(tm)s stamp is visible above one of the bags on the connecting strap. I do not see a makerâe(tm)s mark. These are complete with the various tie-down straps that are usually missing and also still have the leather thongs in place inside the bags that were used to lace closed the internal pockets. T is crackling to the finish, see the photos, but most of the finish is still t and the loss is mainly around the edges of the bags w they flex. The only opening I see is on the back edge of one bag for three or four inches w a seam has opened up. The connecting strap with the hole for the stud is solid with no sign of breaking. Frequently these have been creased by leaving the bags folded on top of one another and the leather then breaks along the crease. (A good reason to display them flat, or draped over something rounded.) One of the locking straps (the strap running crosswise above each bag that passes through a saddle staple coming up through a slot in the connecting strap) had a slight tear that I repaired with a small line of glue, that is not visible. The other strap had apparently pulled away from its stitching and was repaired using two rivets. The rivets are the âeoesplayâe type that I would date to the 1890s. ( read more
