This gorgeous, original photogravure was created by Edward Sheriff Curtis. He is acclaimed the greatest photographer of American Indians in the history of the art form. Beginning in the late 19th century and for the next 3 decades, Curtis took over 40,000 photographs which captured over 80 different tribes. Thousands of Curtis' photographs have been published in The North American Indian, which is a 20-volume publication created for the purpose of highlighting the rich culture of Native Americans. This stunning photogravure is captured in the Curtis' signature style of portraiture. The Native American woman featured in this portrait is draped in an intricately woven, floral cloth. Adding to the drama of this scene, Curtis uses high contrast lighting. The name of the Indian woman is Walvia, which means "medicine root." She is a member of the Taos tribe from New Mexico. This piece is an excellent example of Curtis' Native American photography and a must-have for a collector. This piece has a thin line of mat burn on the extreme mat opening edge, which could be easily hidden with a mat or frame. The image is printed in sepia ink and measures approximately 7.5" by 5.5". It is printed on a cream colored paper which measures approximately 11" by 8.5". This piece will be shipped flat in a priority mail envelope and insured.
