Scarce and original Japanese medal awarded to a soldier who participated in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95. Medal and case are in very nice shape for this issue. GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC. The Sino-Japanese War was formally declared on August 1, 1894 and concluded with the Treaty of Shimonoseki on April 17, 1895. The war was important in Japanese history as it marked the point when the armed forces gained a controlling influence in formal government. It also defined the framework in which Japan would deal with external threats for the next 50 years. Japanese were proud of their victory over China and a sense of national unity was achieved. Another by-product of the war was economic growth in the areas of iron, steel, and shipbuilding. With this, however, came labor disputes and extremist ideologies placing Japan on the long road of constant wars for the next half century. A very historic medal.
