The Print: This auction features a genuine original Japanese woodblock print by the famous artist Toyokuni III Utagawa (Kunisada, 1786-1865). This triptych features the famous revenge scene from the chushingura, or "47 Ronin" story. The samurai are assassinating Kira Yoshinaka to avenge the death of their lord Asano Naganori. Given the signature used by Toyokuni, I estimate that this print dates between 1844 (the year Kunisada adopted the name Toyokuni) and 1850. The signature appears on all three pages of the print. This is a wonderful print by a very famous artist which brilliantly captures the 47 Ronin drama. This original triptych would make a worthy addition to a collection or a nice display piece. Condition Details : The prints are Oban sized, measuring about 10" by 14.5" (25.5 x 37cm)x3. The pages are not attached and they do not have any added backing. Margins are only slightly trimmed, if at all. The hand made paper is in good condition, showing no tears or wormmage and only a handful of tiny pinholes. Corners of the pages are ragged as they appear to have been detached from a backing at some point. Some pieces of that backing remains on the corners on the verso. The paper is toned with age and t are minor surface marks and flaws. Overall good condition. Please inspect my many pictures below.
