These are original news photographer and wire photos, their collectibility and value enhanced by the backstamps and great wealth of documentation on the reverse sides... PHOTO NO. 1 : June 14, 1938. The caption on the reverse reads: MAE WEST CAGEY IN TIFF WITH LAWYER -- LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- When lawyer Joseph Rosen asked screen siren Mae West to "come up" and give a deposition explaining how much Paramount Studios paid her for screen rights to "Diamond Lil" and other questions prefacing the $1,000,000 suit playwright Mark Linder has filed against her, Mae simply had nothing to say. Lawyer Rosen raged and stormed and even threatened Miss West with contempt of court, but to no avail. She was silent on Linder's claims that on a 50-50 agreement with Mae, he is entitled to more than the $12,500 that he has already received from the screening of her irst movie, "She Done Him Wrong." PHOTO SHOWS CINEMA SIREN MAE WEST SITTING PLACIDLY IN LAWYER JOSEPH ROSEN'S OFFICE TODAY. BUREAUS "YOUR CREDIT LINE MUST READ ACME." 6/14/38. T are two backstamps and a news clipping showing that the photo was published in a newspaper on Sept. 23, 1938. The front has markings from the newspaper's art editor: Crop marks to eliminate the background, and a "65," probably referring to the page number. PHOTO NO. 2 : July 3, 1943. The caption on the reverse reads: WIDE WORLD PHOTOS - LOS ANGELES BUREAU - PLEASE CREDIT - DIAMONDS TO TRUMP THE AXIS ... HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. ... HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. Film star Mae West is shown with her diamond collection, estimated to be worth a half-million dollars, which she's turning over to the WPS for use in precision instruments and cutting drills in war factories. Miss West appears next in "Tropicana." T are two backstamps, one for the News library on July 6, 1943. And t are four tiny newspaper clippings showing when this very photo was published...The clipping dated Jan. 8, 1946 humorously and poetically states: "Hear reason Mae West called off that tour to Australia is that the booker and the looker couldn't see the same kind of money." The clipping dated Apr 13 1945 reads: "Mae West has Chicago's Hotel Stevens in a dither over her widely-broadcast invitations to friends to come up for a spiritualistic seance some time." The front side has various crop marks and printer's instructions from the newspaper's art editor. PHOTO NO. 3 : September 19, 1947. Acme caption reads: "Mae West to open show in London: Curvaceous Mae West, U.S. Screen and Stage actress who is in England to play the lead in "Diamond Lil," wears a striking evening gown in contrasting black and white, as she attends a reception in her honor at the Savoy Hotel, London. The play opens in Manchester before going to London." This photo has a rich, almost unprecedented variety of backstamps and clippings from the late 1940's...The front has art editor's retouches and crop marks. PHOTO NO. 4 : September 2, 1950. Mae West arriving by train in New York's Grand Central Station for rehearsals of "Diamond Lil." News clippings affixed when this photo was published in 1954 and 1959. On the front, art editor's crop marks crop out most of the train, black out the area behind the head, and bring out the highlights in Ms. West's hairstyle, as was the custom among newspapers and magazines at that time. PHOTO NO. 5 : June 15, 1951. The caption reads: "SUPREME COURT...Mae West as she appeared in Supreme Court w another actress, Sarah Allen, claims she was slandered a million dollars' worth by Diamond Lil, in an examination before trial..." A dated news clipping shows this photo was published the very next day. The front has the usual crop marks, light retouching, and a "49" probably indicating the page number. PHOTO NO. 6 : June 24, 1970. "Mae West holds press conference at Royal Box Americans Hotel...Diamond Lil, what else?"
