Original GLEASON'S PICTORIAL Journal (Boston, MA), dated December 16, 1854. COMPLETE in 16 pgs, Folio (15 1/4" x 10 3/4").Featured in this issue is the 2+ page article "SACRED CITIES OF THE EAST" containing FIVE (5) original wood engraved views: "THE TEMPLE OF MECCA" (5" X 9"), "THE TEMPLE OF MEDINA"-Al Madina Al Monawara, Saudi Arabia (5" x 9"), "A STREET IN MOCHA"-Saudi Arabia (4 1/2" x 9"), "MINARET OF A RUINED MOSQUE" (3 3/4" X 6"), & "THE CITY OF ADEN"-Yemen (3 3/4" x 5 1/4").The article reads, "...At six leagues from Djedda, in the heart of this narrow valley, appears Mecca, the country of Mahomet (Latin spelling for 'Muhammad'). The upturned soil which surrounds it attests the labor of subterranean fires, now extinct. Still it is in the midst of the circle of grayish rocks that the treasure of grace, sought by Mussulmen from all parts of the world, lies hidden... Mahomet appeared! Rich in the poems and traditions of his tribe (Muhammad), celebrated among all as the guardian of the Kaaba, he wrote the maxims of the Koran, and collected in the Sonna the decisions of jurisconsults and theologians, presenting these two books as the divine and human bases of the new religion..."Other illustrated articles in this issue include: "RUINS OF BAALBEC" (Baalbek, Lebanon), "FORTIFICATIONS AT KONIGSBERG, PRUSSIA", and MORE!!
