Original BALLOU'S PICTORIAL Journal (Boston, MA), dated January 1, 1859. COMPLETE in 16 pgs, Folio (15 1/4" x 11 1/4").Featured in this issue is an original 5 1/4" x 9 1/2" wood engraving "VIEW OF VICTORIA, VANCOUVER'S ISLAND, BRITISH AMERICA". The accompanying article "VICTORIA, VANCOUVER'S ISLAND" reads, "...The drawing gives you the appearance of the town as seen from the water. It is not unlike many, or a majority of our western towns, the architecture being quite Yankeefied. The government buildings occupy the centre. The shipping in the foreground will give you an idea of the present activity of the place, to which recent events have given an extraordinary development...T are plenty of beaver, raccoon, land and sea otters , and the furs bring high prices. T are between nine and ten thousand Indians , very docile and peaceful, and very unlike the fierce tribes of the Northwest...".Other illustrated articles in this issue include: "A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL", "STREET SCENES IN LAHORE, INDIA", "OAK HILL, SEAT OF PRES. In good condition! The Victoria, BC page is in VERY GOOD condition, with a couple of very light stains along the bottom blank border and a small edge imperfection. Many pages have minor to moderate staining along the bottom edge. One non-Victoria page has a small lower edge tear which has been archivally closed, on the verso, with transparent/acid-free Filmoplast® (not visible & no affect to illustrations or text). We unconditionally warrant, without time limit, the authenticity of this 1859 Gleason's Pictorial. We have been dealing in historical newspapers and fine documents since 1974.
