Very rare and important, ORIGINAL, 1861, Illustrated American Civil War Recruiting Broadside printed in 2 Colors and soliciting enlistees in the 7th Regiment of New Hampshire Infantry!!! This fantastic, 1861 Broadside measures approx. 19 1/2" x 27 1/2" and features a fantastic wood engraved illustration of an eagle perched atop a Federal Shield with arrows and olive branches in its talons. Superimposed over the eagle and parts of the text is a very large number "7" printed is bright, bold red ink!!! The text of the Broadside reads in full: âeoe7th Regiment / The Crack Regt. of N.H." / "The undersigned have been appointed Recruiting officer for the 7th Regt. of New Hampshire Volunteers to be raised by General J. C. Abbott under the sanction of the United States Government to which the State pays each man: / $10.00 BOUNTY!" / "Pay & Board from the Day of Enlistment" / "Private Pay Thirteen Dollars a Month" / "$100.00 In Money and 160 Acres of Land at the Close of the War." Recruiting Office ______" / "Capt. A. S. Edgerly, Recruiting Officer". The Broadside is undated but we do know that the 7th Regiment of New Hampshire Volunteers were mustered in on December 13th, 1861. This definitively dates the Broadside to the period between May of 1861 and December 13th, 1861 - it was likely printed in the fall of 1861. We have been unable to find any examples of this Civil War recruiting Broadside in any Library or Museum Collection and believe that this may be a unique example from this long serving Volunteer New Hampshire Regiment.
The 7th New Hampshire was mustered in on December 13th, 1861 and was not mustered out until July 23, 1865. Below you will find a record of their service but suffice it to say that the regiment lost 426 Officers and Enlisted men killed in action or by disease during their term of service. This very rare and stunningly beautiful, 1861 American Civil War Recruiting Broadside is in very good condition - the strike is extremely crisp, bold and dark. The inks are very dark and fully saturate the delicate paper stock. T is no significant staining, soiling, fading or age toning to the sheet. The Broadside is printed in VERY delicate paper stock and it is quite obvious that it was never posted but somehow survived in a trunk or drawer as a memento of the War. The sheet is essentially complete and intact. T are 5 small holes with resultant paper loss and t is some loss at the lower right hand corner of the sheet which just touches the last word of the printed text (see the scans below). The Sheet is very lightly age toned and has a few small spots of light soiling and staining. T are also some tight tears (with no paper loss) within the body of the Broadside and at the edges but other than the chipping at the lower right hand corner t is very little signs of edge wear. Overall this wonderful Broadside is amazingly well preserved given the VERY delicate nature of the paper stock used and it is simply a stunningly beautiful display piece. This very rare and very beautiful, 1861, Illustrated, 2 Color, American Civil War Recruiting Broadside is offered , as always, without reserve and with the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it justly deserves. Good Luck to All!!!! Service of the 7th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War: Duty at Dry Tortugas, Fla., till June 16, 1862. Moved to Beaufort, S.
