For your consideration today from a collector of Original Civil War leather goods is this July 1864 pattern cartridge box... This is a standard issue ammo box that was carried by a Pennsylvania Infantry soldier during the war, and is from a local estate sale... It's in Very Good condition for it's age and is marked well as seen in the photos... It's marked on the outside of the cover flap with the embossed US as shown... On the inside top flap it's marked F.A. SNIFFEN/ US ORDNANCE/ SUB INSPECTOR,- - & PHILAD across the bottom edge, likely made at the Frankfort Arsenal in Philadelphia... It does need a little work by someone with experience to add the original & missing parts to restore it back to all original... The leather has not been cleaned or treated, only stored in a safe place... I have a complete all original box that's the same year, style, and made by the same manufacturer to compair it to... This box appears to have had both roller buckles added some time ago that are not original... It has no inside tins & the closing strap that fits over the brass finial has also been replaced... Only these minor repairs and original replacement parts and it will be 100% again... This box sold by a professional collector, or dealer in complete original condition would be priced over $475.00 to start, depending on its condition... This is a great opportunity to get an original box at less than half the cost of current prices for this kind of cartridge box... It would be a Great project for a professional to restore to original condition, & a Great Investment!..
