ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN SPECIAL ORDERS UNION ARMY 1864 13th US Army Corps -- Maj. Gen. N. J. T. Dana, commanding RARE!NO RESERVE! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Major General Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana (1822-1905) ) ADS 4pp (counting cover) on two leaves folio, Headquarters 13th Army Corps, Cavallo Pass, TX, January 13th, 1864 Special Order No 8 written by Capt. Hugh G. Brown as General Dana's aide de camp, and signed by him on the General's behalf, ordering the occupation of Matagorda Island and Indianola, giving the Union control of the Texas Gulf Coast from Matagorda Bay south to the Mexican border. Highlights include: "Brig. Genl. T.E.G. Ransom, US Vols. will for the present assume command of the Post Delerows Point and Matagorda Island. He will make all useful regulations, reporting his orders to this Hd Qrs. as soon as issued, for approval." Orders that guards will be posted at all steamship landings, an ensuring that no one without proper authority is allowed to board any vessel. Every vessel will be boarded at the moment of her landing, and an accurate list of all passengers made, with notes of the reason for their arrival. The 33rd Iowa is ordered to Indianola, Brig Genl Benton commanding, and the 13th and 15th Maine, and 20th and 34th Iowa are to report to Gen. Ransom on Matagorda Island. Orders for 200 rounds of ammunition for each soldier, and 400 rounds of ammunition for each artillery gun. 33 named soldiers sent to the convelescent camp at New Orleans. and more! Orders conclude " By order of Maj. Genl. N.J.T. Dana - Hugh G. Brown - Capt. and AAG" It is very rare to find original official documents of Union forces in Texas. Major General Dana was commander of the 13th Army Corps during this time, with his headquarters in Ft Esperanza at Pass Cavallo with the First Division. Prior to this Dana had commanded the invasion of Brownsville and managed to chase the Confederates past Laredo and clamp down on the cotton trade with Mexico from South Texas. He was severely wounded leading his troops at Antietam earlier in the war. Thomas E. G. Ransom was one of the most prominent "rising stars" of the Union. Wounded four times in battle (Missouri, Ft. Donelson, severely in the head at Shiloh, and Sabine Crossroads), he died of dysentery while on campaign in Alabama in November 1864. Upon hearing of his death, Gen. US Grant wept. Tecumseh Sherman kept a photo of Ransom on his office wall, even 20 years after the war. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ruled paper, 12.5" x 8".
