SCARCE ORIGINAL 1910 CHRISTY MATHEWSON BARNSTORMING BASEBALL POSTER. Offered here is one of the scarcest of all Christy Mathewson memorabilia. This ORIGINAL circa 1910 cardboard broadside depicts Mathewson in that famous pitching pose of his. Mathewson was born in Pennsylvania and often lent his services and his good name to the minor league barnstorming tours of the day. This advertising double-header baseball action took place in the Pennsylvania coal mining town of Slatedale. This particular and incredibly rare advertising poster announces a Sept 1st double-header pitting the local Slatedale Athletic Club against the regional powerhouse "Nanticoke Professionals." Filled with local and state All-Stars, many would go onto noteworthy major and minor league careers. In its heyday 1910-1940, this area of Western PA was a hotbed of raw prewar athletic talent, and produced a veritable flood of strong major league baseball players and pro football stars, such as Jim Thorpe, Pete Gray and Steve Bilko. This incredible piece measures the standard 14 x 22 inches on heavy cardboard, and is presented in a boxing-poster style format. It features a beautiful graphic of Christy Mathewson. The caliber of vintage advertising poster and genuinely antique memorabila is virtually impossible to find these days, and is rarely offered, particularly in this state of preservation.
