A wonderful chromolithograph has been selected from a Belgian work entitled "L’Illustration Horticole", published in Ghent in 1854 under the supervision of Jean Linden. Historical Background: The Linden family were renowned horticulturalists and Jean Linden’s L’Illustration Horticole was one of the finest botanical periodicals of the latter half of the 19th Century. It was first published in Ghent, Belgium in 1854, and the plates were lavishly illustrated and lithographed by some of the very best botanical artists and lithographers - A. Goosens, P. De Pannemaeker and J. Goffart. During the time that Europe was in the grip of “orchid fever”, which some orchid lovers might say has never passed, Belgium became a dominant force in the cultivation of orchids.
