Abstract Composition" watercolor on paper, signed A Volkov (1886 - 1957) in cyrillic, Russian Master Paintiner Photographs Biography Painter, graphic and stage artist, Volkov produced genre and narrative scenes, portraits, still lives, landscapes and abstract compositions. He is one of the founders of the Uzbek school of art, having studied at the faculty of natural sciences in the St. Petersburg University (1906-1908). From 1907 attended D.Bartinker's private studio in St. Petersburg and later studied at the Higher Art School of the Academy of Arts (1908-1911) in Berstein's private school (1910-1912), w his teachers were N. Rerikh and I. Shervud, and in the Kiev Art school (1912-1916) taught by F. Krichevskiy. Volkov participated in exhibitions in 1920, and was a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKHRR) and the Association of Russian Artists (AKHR) (since 1927), “Masters of the New Orient” (since 1928). He organized “Volkov's brigade” which brought together young artists of Uzbekistan. In 1919 he was a director of the Central Asian State Museum of Art and in 1922 - head of the “Proletkult - Theatre”. He additionally worked as a teacher at Tashkent art colleges. In most of his works Volkov add to primitivism, striving for simple, but solid and expressive composition. Description In our opinion this is an outstanding watercolor on paper painting. This is wonderfully delightful and looks like Volkov's abstract painting, which bears the signature of Volkov. We think this is the work of Volkov or his follower. This painting is framed and measures 24.8cm x 44.5cm (without frame). It will be an amazing showcase in any serious collection or on display in any home. In our expertise, the paper looks old. We photographed this piece without glass to avoid glare. We think the quality of this painting is outstanding and in our opinion considered to be museum quality. Please see the photographs for a complete view. Judging from past auction results, Volkov's paintings are highly valued and in our opinion, this kind of painting in a gallery would be valued around $25,000.Provenance: We purchased this painting 3 years ago at an estate sale in New York. We don't have any more information or provanance on this piece. We are selling this painting in the same condition how we purchased it. We have not consulted with any art experts about this piece. We sell it like "in manner of" or "after" Volkov because we are not experts and can only provide the information available to us and description as best we can. So why is it and not in Sotheby's New York? Authentication of Volkov's work is highly contentious, and so-called experts often seem to disagree. We don't have the luxury of the delay while different experts with different opinions fight over who is right, so this is sold as "manner of Joan Volkov" in case expert analysis cannot agree that this is by Volkov himself. Please check for yourself Volkov's artwork, maybe you will find something similar. Volkov is one of the most expensive artists in the world. His artwork constantly sells at record prices at auction houses and galleries, even paintings that are "attributed to" or "in manner of" have attracted the attention of collectors and sell for high prices around the world.
