AUCTION DESCRIPTION Up for your consideration is a nice, simple, vintage Viking Ship bookend pair that bears a striking resemblance to a cast iron Bradley and Hubbard set. That set bore the B&H shopmark, was these are unmarked. Additionally, this pair is cast from either solid bronze or brass and weighs much more than the B&H cast iron set. In any event, the design is quite nice and they are definitely vintage Deco pieces. Each bookend features a gigantic, single-sailed vessel traversing the oceanâe(tm)s stormy, rolling waves, which lap against the side of the shipâe(tm)s wooden frame. The details are simple but oh-so-nice, from the full, wind-blown sail, the long oars that jut into the turbulent water, and the curling wave crests. One can only imagine the turbulent times the Vikings had on such ships! The pair is quite old and has gone untouched. The gold gild is still visible on the surface and a heavy natural patina has been left from times past. These pieces are surely heavy enough to hold some hefty nautical books, and the design is one that brings to mind the ancient seafarers, hunters, and traders that braved the savage sea. The ships measure 5 3⁄4âe Tall, 4 1⁄4âe Wide, and 2 1⁄2âe Deep, and the pair weighs in at 6 lbs. This set would make a fine addition to any collection.
