This lot contains an original ink and watercolor (not a copy or printed version) of a bare-bottomed boy racing for the outhouse, done by a very talented cartoonist named Craig Fox. Mr. Fox was a cartoonist with the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (before this work was done). My research indicates that he later illustrated somewhat suggestive postcards featuring rather plump (but pleasingly so) ladies. The postcard for sale was drawn on a 3.5 x 5.5 inch linen cardstock. It contains the hand-lettered message, "GOSH! I HOPE I AIN'T A 'LIL BEHIND WITH THIS SKETCH FOR EARL BARTON." It is titled "RUSH!" and signed by Fox, along with a small fox head sketch. This comes from the collection of a person who made a hobby of writing to cartoonists all over the country requesting sketches and original artwork. On the back, t are some notations about when the request was made and when the piece was received (Sept. 18, 1941). T is also an accompanying letter included in this lot. It is handwritten on Craig Fox's personal stationery from Rochester, NY and dated Sept. 17, 1941. He apologizes for his tardy reply. Then he explains that he has not been with the "Democrat" (newspaper) in some years, and that he is "now drawing comics for 'the dear little kiddies.'" He also talks about his family heritage, and unfortunately uses a derogatory term for Italians in the discussion. Both pieces are in very good condition. The postcard sketch even includes some of the original pencil guidelines. A great little sketch for collectors of original artwork and outhouses! (I will be putting other items up from this collection from time to time, and often simultaneously, so be on the lookout! Please note that I will not be available to answer questions on the final day of the sale, August 3.)
