Life and career Huebler grew up on a farm in Michigan during the Depression, and at 17, he enlisted in the Marines to fight in World War II. Stationed in the West Pacific, his excellent artistic eye (a childhood nickname was Hawkeye) earned him the duty of flying on air missions to search out enemy camps camouflaged in the island topography. After the war, funded by the GI Bill, Huebler earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Michigan, and later went on to study at the Académie Julian in Paris.
