I inherited this sword from the granddaughter of Captain John Ashby, a company commander in the 8th Virginia Regiment, Confederate States Army (John Ashby was a cousin of General Turner Ashby, CSA). The granddaughter died recently at the age of 95. She was raised by her grandfather in Fauquier County, Virginia, and told me that Captain Ashby left the sword to her when he died in 1928. She said that he carried the sword at Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg. During the Charge, Captain John Ashby's younger brother, Private James Ashby, went Missing in Action. His body was never recovered and presumed by the family to have been buried in an unmarked grave. The granddaughter (my kinswoman) told me that her grandfather's most vivid memory of Gettysburg (that haunted his dreams for the rest of his life) was of the flies that covered his gore-splattered uniform after Pickett's Charge. I believe that this is a Model 1845 British Infantry Officer's Sword. A brass button stamped "PROOF" is embedded in the blade (see photo). The sword measures 38.5 inches long and has what I believe is a snakeskin grip and traces of the old leather around the guard. It does not have a scabbard. The Confederate veteran's granddaughter told me that the sword hung over the fireplace at the family home when she was a child, possibly from such a leather strap.. Shipping and Handling in the USA will be $45.00 (the sword is heavy and will be packaged in a box for shipment). The sale will be final. I am disposing of a number of such heirlooms.
