This rocker was purchased from the privatecollection of retired White House photographer, George Szabo (photographer from1956-1980). The history of the chair is as follows:
The rocker has been in covered storage up until now and shows the care that has been taken to keep it original. This rocking chair was placed in the White House in 1955. Over the years it has seen some travel as it has followed Presidents Kennedy and Johnson to Camp David, Texas and Maine. The statement from the staff photographer is that the chair was quite comfortable and Johnson used to like reading briefs during the morning and current news in the evening while using the chair. Others found it relaxing and had it sent for extended stays to Camp David where it was used in formal and informal gatherings of visiting world leaders of the time. The chair was a personal item of one of the presidents and was brought to the White House during JFK's term but I am unable to say for sure which president the chair was the personal property of. It became a gift presented by then departing president Johnson to his staff. The rocking chair was manufactured by the Grand Rapids Bookcase and Chair Company. It is solid wood and heavy. There is a metal White House inventory tracking plate on the bottom that reads JK-1-5-60. Overall condition of the chair is excellent. The chair comes with documentation from the staff photographer and a newspaper clipping about Mr. Szabo. This is an original item, one of a kind, and would make a great addition to someone's White House or Presidential collection. Shipping will have to be arranged through a freight company.
