From Evelyn Lincoln's Photo Archive of President John F Kennedy This lot consists of 2 original 1962 R.L. Knudsen JFK photographs. These interesting, unusual photos were taken on April 2, 1962 while JFK was making his physical fitness speech for TV. JFK was a major advocate for health and fitness fifty years ago. John F. Kennedy came into the Presidential office with a goal of improving the health of the nation as part of his New Frontier . As President-elect, he wrote and had published an article in Sports Illustrated, December 26, 1960, called The Soft American which warned against the negative aspects becoming unfit in a changing world where automation and increased leisure time replaced the benefits of exercise and hard work . JFK often addressed the issue of physical fitness, frequently in his public pronouncements and assigned new projects to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. These photos were taken during one of his physical fitness messages. These original 8x10 photos, one is color and one is black and white, were taken by R.L. Knudsen and they come from Evelyn Lincoln's photo archive of JFK . R. L.
