ORIGINAL MERCATOR MAP OF POLAND ("SARMATIA"), C. 1575
On offer is an attractive, copper-engraved Ptolemaic map covering eastern Europe from the Baltic through the Black Sea known in ancient times as Sarmatia and Tauricam Chersonese. Ptolemy called the area Sarmatia referring to the lands inhabited by Sanna-tians, or tribes of Persian origin. Later, in 15th - 18th centuries, many writers considered Sarmatians to be forefathers of Polish nobility. The map, published c. 1575 in Gerard Mercator's copy of Ptolomey's 1310 Geographia, is decorated with a strapwork title cartouche and a tent encampment. It carries the title Europa Tabula VIII in the top margin. The map is in fair shape (see pictures). It is folded as issued, uncolored and creased along the center-fold. T are also some minor wormholes in the margin (along with some chipping) and it is toned throughout slightly from the age. Latin text on the verso. Higher-resolution scans are available on request. Gerard Mercator is second only to Ptolemy, the ancient scholar from Alexandria in Egypt, in terms of his importance to the history of cartography. He was born in Flanders and had studied geography, cartography and mathematics at the University of Leuven (Louvain) in Belgium. He published his first map in 1537 at the age of 25 - a map of Palestine. In 1538 he made and published his first world map, based on one by Ptolemy that had been lost in Europe during the dark ages and brought back during the Renaissance by Arab scholars. This is an original, 430-year-old engraving. It is NOT a modern reproduction. All items are sold with a no-questions-asked guarantee and can be returned (at the buyer's expense) for a full refund. Higher-resolution images are available on request. We have a number of other maps for sale at the moment. To see a complete list, click .
