Howard Daniel Becker 1914-1995 Title: "Man on Bridge " Signed and dated lower left: "H. D. Becker 1987" Oil on Board , 20" x 16", framed 29" x 25" Description: The painting depicts an old bridge and a lonely man walking on it. A painter wanted to draw the viewer's attention to the beauty of the entire scene: a rolling up rural road surrounded by flowering trees, an old stone bridge casting deep shade on the creek and very light blue colors on the pale sky. This painting features some of Becker's best impressionistic brushstrokes. Condition: This beautiful painting is in the good original condition and ready to hang. Please see photos, they are part of my description. Provenance: A large collection of Becker's paintings was acquired at artist's estate auction in 1995 and is now on sale in our Ebay store. Rendell in their Residence (Harrisburg , Pennsylvania) in 2005 . Howard Becker showed his pictorial vision as a great master of Pennsylvania landscapes. He attended Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, NY, graduating with highest honors in 1935. The war did not stop this artist, who was gaining a reputation at many art exhibits and shows around New York state. Between 1941 and 1945 he served in the US Army, becoming an official artist to record the war in watercolor. Since 1941 to 1945 armed with a paintbrush and pencil, he traveled with the US Army to North Africa, Italy and France, producing hundreds of watercolor sketches of US Army forces, war damage and civilian life. He won several Army art contests, and also found favor with Colonel R. Hunter Clarcson, who rewarded him with a week in Paris to paint. Several pieces were retained by the Historical Properties Section in Washington, DC. After the war he established a studio in Palm Beach, Florida and later Taos, New Mexico, living in Taos art colony and Santa Fe, traveling to Arizona and California, were he spent almost nine years, painting and holding exhibits. In 1954 Howard moved to Honesdale, PA, which became his home,where he lived a half of his life. He married his art school sweetheart, Elsa Garratt Harrison, also an artist. They had one son Peter. Until his passing at the age 81 and three days, he learned every road of Wayne County, painting old farms and village scenes, country churches, covered bridges, capturing historical scenes, making side trips at times.
