Original Oil on Board Painting of a Mare and Foal by the equestrian artist, Geoffrey Mortimer, dating from c.1920s. This is a beautiful study of a mare and foal as they canter across a field and captures the movement of the two horses brilliantly. Geoffrey Mortimer (1895-1986) came from Norfolk and was known as the 'working man's Munnings', because his horse paintings were more affordable than those of Sir Alfred Munnings, who was painting at the same time. It is said that Geoffrey Mortimer was a studio assistant to Sir Alfred Munnings and as this painting shows, Mortimer could accurately depict the movement of the horse with the exuberance of Munnings. This painting appears to be unsigned although there is a possibly a small monogram in the lower right hand corner of the painting. The previous owner (from Norfolk) has attached a label giving the artist's name and it is certainly in Geoffrey Mortimer's style and of the right age. The painting has been reframed. The original board of the painting is a little bowed and the new backing has helped to protect it. The painting is in very good condition throughout and the colours remain vibrant. There are a few small scuffs to the surface of the paint but these do not detract from the overall composition. No other damage.
