Original Shoda Koho Shin Hanga Japanese Wood Block Print Pre-Earthquake Hasegawa Edition Offered in this eBay auction is an original Japanese woodblock print by Shoda Koho(1871-1946), one of the most important early Shin Hanga print makers, and an important artist featured in Hasegawa's "Night Scenes" series, considered by many to be "the essence of Shin Hanga". This particular print is a very important, early edition. It bears the square Hasegawa publisher seal rather than the round Nishinomiya seal. Both original editions of this print were printed by Hasegawa Yosaku, but after the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 he changed his last name and the name of the publishing house which he inherited from his father, Hasegawa Takejiro, the premier publisher of the Meiji era, from Hasegawa to Nishinomiya. This print was already considered rare and valuable by the 1930's, so much so that it spawned a kind of counterfeit copy or imitation (see the article "Some More Look Alike Prints of the Early Shin Hanga Era" at the Ukiyo-e Gallery site). The comparison is shown in image 6. The print measures approximately 10" x 15" and is a superb impression with excellent color in excellent condition (t is a small loss to one corner underneath the mat which cannot be seen). It has been professionally mounted in museum quality conservation mounts. This auction represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a rare and important print from the early shin-hanga era.
